So, it’s summer time and you have the travel bug but all your vacation days are used up and let’s be real, so is your travel fund. So, what now? Are you doomed to a summer of staring at your TV bemoaning your terrible misfortune? No way! There is always adventure to be found if you know where to look.
Maybe your vacation days are all used up, but you still got the weekends, right?! Find a local camp site, pack up the car, and spend some time in the great outdoors. Timothy and I went car camping recently (check it out here) and had a great time for under $50. We played card games, roasted hot dogs, made some s’mores, went on some nature walks, and had a great low-cost adventure.
Discover Free Community Events
Most communities have free events during the summer that you can enjoy. In the Nashville area, you can check out Ms. Cheap’s list of free things to do or check out the Nashville Scene’s community calendar. However, no matter where you live, I think you will be surprised at what free events your community offers! For example, our community has free community concerts every Thursday night at The Streets of Indian Lake. Do a little research and find out when the free festivals, concerts, and events are happening in your city or a city near you.
Be A Tourist in Your Own City
Playing tourist in your own city can be a lot of fun! Find out what days your local museums offer free or discounted admission and learn something new about your hometown. If you’re in the Nashville area, check out the Tennessee State Museum which offers free admission, tour the Parthenon in Centennial Park for just $6, or take a stroll through the beautiful Opryland Hotel (tip: avoid hotel parking fees by parking your car at the Opry Mills Mall). Even in the smallest town, you can find a fun way to play tourist if you’re willing to look!
Beat the Heat at the Movies
During the summer, Regal Cinemas Summer Movie Express shows family movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am for $1! Even if you don’t have kids, this is a fun way to beat the heat!
Pack a picnic and spend the afternoon or evening at your local park. Bring some games, a book, or a frisbee and have some fun outside! [Timothy and my favorite yard games are bocce ball and Disc Slam.] If your local park has tennis courts, grab some friends and play some friendly doubles. Don’t want to venture out to a park? Have some fun in your own backyard. Invite friends over, have a cookout, and play some yard games. Even just taking a walk or a bike ride gets you outside and away from the TV. There are lots of options and getting outside doesn’t have to cost you a thing!
Visit Your Local Library
Curl up with a good book and let your imagination go on the adventure. Visit your local library to find some new summer reads or check out a classic movie. Most libraries now give you the option of checking out e-books which means you don’t even have to leave your house! However, I think searching for that next read in the library is part of the fun!
There are still plenty of ways for you to have an awesome summer even if you are out of vacation days and/or travel funds. Life will always be as fun as you make it so, get out there and enjoy the rest of your summer!
